World Devastators are gigantic superweapons and automated factories designed to consume planetary resources through powerful tractor beams. Used often by the Empire, their molecular furnaces transform everything they devour into fuel and raw materials for producing starfighters, droids, weapons, and even new Devastators.

In this scene, one has already stripped the distant terrain bare, while another begins its descent to feed. The whole vibe EC wanted with this scene, was these monoliths act as mechanical forces of nature.
